Inequality, Polarization, and Culture Wars

Abstract

Income inequality and political polarization have risen while elections have become increasingly centered on cultural conflicts peripheral to redistribution. The paper develops a framework in which culture wars disrupt the electoral and financial alignments of tax competition by moving some poor voters to the Right and some rich donors to the Left.
