Global Economic Integration and the Political Economy of Education Provision

Abstract

Globalization's localized labor-market effects can change subnational politicians' incentives to provide education. Using the Indian information-technology boom as an external shock, the paper finds that English-medium schooling expanded in emerging IT hubs, especially in electorally competitive places, and that incumbents benefited electorally.
